Doug and Mike Starn American, b. 1961
Twins and collaborators, Doug and Mike Starn have a diverse conceptual practice that freely mixes photography, printmaking, sculpture, and architectural installation. Famous for their ongoing “Big Bambú” series (2008–) - a massive, performative installation made from lashed together bamboo—they have intervened both on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at the 54th Venice Biennale. The brothers have also taken bamboo fragments from their installation and re-imagined them as freestanding sculpture.
Their conceptual photography practice incorporates a variety of deconstructive techniques such as décollage, appropriation and reinterpretation of art historical work, and novel framing devices (via Artsy).
