Biography
Trained as an interior architect, Rainer Lagemann turned to sculpture later in his career, but made up for lost time with a signature technique that has earned him critical acclaim around the globe. He crafts elegant, eerily lifelike human figures out of one simple building block: small, hollow metal squares, which he welds together in vast quantities. “I use metal squares to sculpt the human form, creating works that elicit both the strength and delicacy of the body,” Lagemann describes. The four sides of the square represent the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional dimensions of the human being. For Lagemann, the intricate shadows and reflections caused by the sculptures are an integral part of each work.
