In the 1940s Cavallon became increasingly interested in the properties of light. Here, negative white space is used to to bring out the luminosity of the colours and create a rich, sensorial experience of viewing. Guggenheim curator Fred Licht writes that “the secret seems to lie in his use of white… Reds, greens, yellows and blues are distilled by the whites until they hover like fragrances" (Licht,Tre artisti italo-americani, 17).
