Milcah Bassel American, b. 1981

Milcah Bassel is a multidisciplinary artist raised in Israel and based in Jersey City. Her work is an experiential investigation of body-space relations addressing the porous exchange between internal and external systems. Incorporating installation, performance, drawing, and other media, the pieces often demand physical engagement and viewer participation. She holds a Post-Baccalaureate in Studio Art from Brandeis University (2011) and an MFA in Visual Art from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University (2013).

Bassel has exhibited and performed in galleries and institutions both nationally and internationally, with recent shows at Ruben Museum of the Arts, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Newark Museum, Zimmerli Art Museum, Soho20 Gallery, Whitebox, William Paterson University, Kniznick Gallery at Brandeis University, The Gateway with Project For Empty Space, and Hanina Gallery in Tel Aviv, among others. Art fairs include PULSE and EAB in New York, UNTITLED and Select in Miami. Awards and residencies include ACRE (WI, 2012); Brodsky Center residency funded by an NEA grant (NJ, 2014), Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Artist-In-Residence (MA, 2015); STAR residency at Guttenberg Arts (NJ, 2017); Bronx Museum AIM program (NY, 2017); Smack Mellon Hot Picks (2017); Workspace Residency at the Center for Book Arts (NYC, 2018); New Jersey State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship (2019).
