Ebrahim Noroozi: Presented as part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Fest

This exhibition brings together multiple photo essays by Iranian photographer Ebrahim Noroozi. Included in the exhibition is Victims of Forced Love, a series that documents the life of a young mother and daugh-ter in the aftermath of an acid attack that left them severely disfigured and in need of many surgeries.

In Mournful Women and Mourners, Noroozi documents the ceremonies during the Mourning of Muharram: Mournful Women depicts female observers of Chehel Menbar (forty pulpits) in their ceremonial veils as they go barefoot to light candles and make food offerings and Mourners depicts male observers making fires and covering themselves in mud and clay, symbols of grief and loss.

Noroozi’s most recent photo essays include War is Not Over and Hydrotherapy, both of which address the ongoing physical recovery for the thousands of volunteer veterans following the Iran-Iraq war more than 25 years ago.

Ebrahim Noroozi was awarded first prize in the World Press Photo category of “Observed Portraits” for Victims of Forced Love, and second place prize in the category of “Staged Portraits” for Mournful Women. His work has been published internationally, including the New York Times and the Washington Post.
